A Big and Beautiful Bagnall

A Big and Beautiful Bagnall

We have a slightly bigger Bagnall tank engine to unveil today. This model started life as a commission, and given that there was increasing interest in additional copies for other customers, we decided to make it a full-release kit.

The model is based on the 'Delta' class 2-6-2T locomotives built by W.G. Bagnall, first for Egypt and then for India. These large machines were 2'6" gauge, and featured very long tanks, which extended beyond the smokebox in a similar manner to the Vale of Rheidol engines. The machines built for Eqypt featured sand-skirts, which is a temptation for perhaps another future model. One member of the class, AK16, was purchase by Peter Rampton as part of the Collection X fleet of narrow gauge locomotives.

Original drawings have not been used in making this model, but the shape and style captures the character of the machines built by Bagnall. The model has the same general proportions, but has had minor some changes from the prototype in order for it to fit a donor Graham Farish 08 chassis. Similar to Avontuur, this is a large model locomotive and should not be operated on curves tighter than 12" radius.

The kit has all the parts required to convert a donor chassis to include valve gear, with the body in several large components for ease of painting. The finish model maintains key features of similar Indian-based locomotives, with shutters beside the cab doors, turbo generator, double-skin roof and smokebox star. The first batch of these kits is available to purchase today for £89.99.

Next week, we have three more models inspired by machines from W.G. Bagnall. But are they large or small?...
