These locomotives are based on prototypes built by manufacturers based outside the UK. This includes German manufacturer Orrenstein and Koppel, and the USA-based Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philadelphia. Many designs from the former found their way to the UK, for both industrial and heritage lines.
