This is a detailed scale model kit for adult collectors. Not for children under 14 years old.
This model kit is of carriages 106 and 107, as running on the Ffestiniog Railway prior in 2020. Carriage 106 was originally constructed at Boston Lodge in 1968 as part of the Centenary Stock series of vehicles, also known as 'The Barns'. Since the railway would no longer traverse the old Moelwyn Tunnel, vehicles could be built to a slightly larger loading gauge. These were modern vehicles for the time, and took design cues from Lynton and Barnstable Carriage 14, that had been modified to work the railway.
Carriages 106 and 107 are both Third/First Composite Saloons, with the Third saloon split by a central First Class compartment. This follows the design principle of the original 'Barn' vehicle.
In the early 2000's, 106's body was completely rebuilt. Additional funds were sourced for a new frame, and so volunteers constructed a whole new carriage instead - this being 107. Meanwhile, Boston Lodge completed a rebuild of 106 to the same design.
There is also a raft of detailing brake and electrical connections specific to these vehicles. The gangway fallplates can positioned either up or down, with the latter requiring the use of the provided 'Gangway Couplings'.
Manufacturing
This is a highly detailed 4mm scale kit built using our in house machines, with High Definition resin and build layers just 50 microns (0.05mm) thick. Whilst there is 'stepping' visible on the parts up close, this is not discernible once the kit is painted and/or from usual viewing distances.
The parts have their main supports removed, though detailing and structural supports will remain to protect the parts in transit, and require removing prior to assembly. Some polishing and filing of the parts is required to provide a smooth finish.
Detailed resin bogies and PECO plastic wheelsets are included with the model. The bogies include NEM pockets with which accept the included resin OO9 couplings. For glazed vehicles, a clear perspex sheet is provided that can be cut to size before fitting.
Assembly
You will need modelling tools (such as a craft knife, cutting board, files and micro-drills), adhesive and paints to assemble and finish the kit.
Hints and Tips
Keep resin parts out of direct sunlight. Detailing and structural supports remain in order to protect the parts in transit, and should be removed before painting.
Parts will benefit from a wash in cool soapy water before painting, but do not leave them to soak. Alternative, Isopropyl alcohol is also a good cleaning solution if parts feel overly sticky.
If any components appear bent or warped, heat them gently with a hairdryer or in warm water (do not soak), and then hold parts whilst they cool.
If modifying the parts in any way (either by cutting, filing, sanding or drilling) be sure to wear appropriate protective clothing such as gloves and masks.
