This is a detailed scale model kit for adult collectors. Not for children under 14 years old.
In 1927, Kerr, Stuart & Co built an elarged 'Matary' class locomotive for the Antiga Sugar Company. This massive 0-6-2T was built to 2'6" gauge, with an enlarged Huxley boiler to burn oil and later bagasse. After many years work in the West Indies, a trustee of the Welshpool and Llanfair railway found the locomotive and brought it back to the UK, entering service in Wales in 1977. In the most recent overhaul, Joan has received a new boiler with shorter firebox, and an outside-framed rear ponytruck.
The model depicts the locomotive in its current form, and features a wealth of detailing both inside the cab, and on the frames. The CAD was created from drawings by the former Cheif Mechanical Engineer of the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, Colin Tickle, who also gave us access to the locomotive to photograph and measure. All these details are still present in the kit, albeit with some small revisions (such as a choice of bufferbeam with/without brake pipes).
The model includes all parts required to assemble working outside-framed motion, including accurate replacement flycranks and ponytruck wheelset.
This is an advance kit. The body is in many separate components, including frame, smokebox, cab, tanks and roof. The Graham Farish 08 chassis requires significant modification to complete, in this case replacing the frames and all the motion and flycranks. There is no valve gear, and the only delicate component is the crosshead and coupling-rod assembly.
