This model kit is of a freelance steam tramway locomotive, inspired by the Sharp, Stewart and Company machines built for the Clogher Valley Railway (N.I.). This 3' gauge railway from for some 30 miles in County Tyrone. Six locomotives of the same design were supplied. This model is a scaled down representation of these machines, and are suited to layouts representing 2' to 2'6" gauge.
This is a intermediate kit, with the body made up of several large components including the lower frame, tanks and cabs, smokebox, coal-heap and cab interior. There are also many small and delicate parts to fix, including the rear lamp, sanding linkage, saferty valves and brake pipes.
Manufacturing
This is a highly detailed 4mm scale kit built using our in house machines, with High Definition resin and build layers just 50 microns (0.05mm) thick. Whilst there is 'stepping' visible on the parts up close, this is not discernible once the kit is painted and/or from usual viewing distances.
The parts have their main supports removed, though detailing and structural supports will remain to protect the parts in transit, and require removing prior to assembly. Some polishing and filing of the parts is required to provide a smooth finish. Clear (and varnished) resin windows are included, though you may wish to use clear plastic sheet (not included) if preferred.
Assembly
You will need modelling tools (such as a craft knife, cutting board, files and micro-drills) adhesive, paints and ballast material (such as Liquid Gravity) to assemble the kit.
This kit requires a KATO 11-109 to motorise the finished model. Consult instructions to see if the chassis needs any modification before fitting.
Hints and Tips
Keep resin parts out of direct sunlight. Detailing and structural supports remain in order to protect the parts in transit, and should be removed before painting.
Parts will benefit from a wash in cool soapy water before painting, but do not leave them to soak. Alternative, Isopropyl alcohol is also a good cleaning solution if parts feel overly sticky.
If any components appear bent or warped, heat them gently with a hairdryer or in warm water (do not soak), and then hold parts whilst they cool.
If modifying the parts in any way (either by cutting, filing, sanding or drilling) be sure to wear appropriate protective clothing such as gloves and masks.
